# Self storage - what is it and how does it work?

Your things no longer fit at home or in the office, and while looking for somewhere to put them you keep coming across the term "self storage". It sounds like an ordinary warehouse, but you do not know how it differs, how much space you need or what to look at when choosing.

Most texts on the subject are written by the operators of specific facilities, so each one mainly describes its own boxes. This makes it easy to rent a box that is too big or too small, or in a facility where you cannot comfortably carry in a wardrobe. That only becomes clear on the first move, when the contract is already signed.

Below, without promoting any facility: what self storage is, what using it looks like, what you can keep in it, when another option is better and how to compare offers.

## What self storage is

Self storage is self-service storage: a facility divided into lockable boxes of different sizes, from small lockers to garage-sized boxes. You rent one box and use it yourself. You bring your things, arrange them and collect them yourself, without any staff involved.

That is the difference from a classic storage service. There you hand your things over to staff, who accept, store and return them. In self storage you have your own access to the box, most often by code, card or app, and you come whenever you need to, within the facility's opening hours.

Self storage is used by private individuals and companies alike. We describe the most common situations in the [warehouses](https://maszbox.pl/en/magazyny.md) category.

## What using self storage looks like, step by step

1. **You choose the box size.** Make a list of the things you want to store and measure the largest ones. Leave some room for a walkway, so you can reach things at the back without carrying everything out into the corridor.
2. **You sign the contract.** It usually sets out the rental period, the notice terms and often a deposit. What to look out for in the contract is described with the offers of [warehouses for rent](https://maszbox.pl/en/magazyny/na-wynajem.md).
3. **You get access.** A gate code, a card, an app or a key, depending on the facility.
4. **You bring your things yourself.** You arrange the transport on your own. Some facilities have trolleys, but it is worth asking about this in advance.
5. **You use it as needed.** You add and take things whenever you want, within the facility's access hours.

## What you can and cannot keep in self storage

Self storage works well for things you need, but not every day:

- furniture and household appliances during a renovation or move,
- cardboard boxes of things there is no room for in the flat,
- seasonal equipment: bikes, skis, garden equipment,
- stock from an online shop and company materials,
- documents and archives.

What you may not store is set out in the facility's rules. Usually this includes, among other things, flammable materials and perishable food. Similar rules apply to storage units, and we describe them in the article on [what a storage unit rental contract must contain](https://maszbox.pl/en/blog/umowa-najmu-komorki-lokatorskiej-co-musi-zawierac.md). If you store stock sensitive to damp, see how to protect it in an unheated box: [small warehouse for an online shop](https://maszbox.pl/en/blog/maly-magazyn-dla-sklepu-internetowego-jak-go-urzadzic.md).

## Self storage, a storage unit, a garage or a container - which to choose

Self storage is one of several storage options. Before choosing, compare it with the others:

| | Self storage | Storage unit | Garage | Container |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Size | from small lockers to garage-sized boxes | usually small | the size of a car or larger | depending on the container type |
| Access | by code or card, during the facility's hours | through the building's stairwell or basement | usually directly from outside | usually by car right to the door |
| Conditions | inside a building, some facilities are heated | depend on the building's basement | depend on how the garage is built | depend on the weather |
| Typical use | moves, companies, seasonal equipment | household things close to home | a car, tools, bikes | materials, tools, equipment on a building site |

If you need a small space close to home, see [storage units](https://maszbox.pl/en/komorki-lokatorskie.md). For a bike, tools or equipment you want to drive up to, a [garage](https://maszbox.pl/en/garaze.md) works well. You will find a detailed comparison of a [warehouse](https://maszbox.pl/en/magazyny.md) and a [container](https://maszbox.pl/en/kontenery.md) in the article [warehouse or container](https://maszbox.pl/en/blog/magazyn-czy-kontener-na-wynajem-co-wybrac.md).

## How to compare offers from different facilities

Self storage facilities differ in things you cannot see in a photo of a box. Before renting, ask about:

- the width of doors and corridors, because this decides whether you can carry in a wardrobe or a sofa without taking it apart,
- a lift, if the box is on an upper floor,
- driving up and parking at the entrance, so you do not have to carry things from far away,
- access hours and method: round the clock or at set hours, by code, card or app,
- the option to switch to a larger or smaller box during the rental, without signing a new contract,
- lighting and CCTV in the corridors and around the facility,
- heating, if you store things sensitive to temperature.

You can check the terms of the contract itself, such as the deposit, the notice period and what the price includes, against the list for offers of [warehouses for rent](https://maszbox.pl/en/magazyny/na-wynajem.md).

## Common questions

### How does self storage differ from a storage service?

In self storage you have access to your box yourself and you bring and collect your things yourself. In a storage service you hand them over to staff, who accept and return them.

### Do I have access to the box around the clock?

It depends on the facility. Some are open round the clock, some at set hours. Check this before signing the contract, especially if you will come often.

### Can I switch to a box of a different size?

Many facilities allow it, but the rules vary. Ask whether the switch requires a new contract.

### Does anyone besides me have access to my box?

The facility's rules set this out. Ask who can enter the box and in what situations, and whether you can fit your own lock.
